I voted for removable battery, but would have loved to split the vote between that and full sized USB.

That's exactly how I feel.  one question though..is there a way to charge the Thrive battery when not in the tablet?  Does Toshiba sell an external battery charger for the Thrive tablet?

That's a good question. I've just searched Amazon but couldn't see one.

I'm betting there will be a separate charger available to charge the spare battery, if not by Toshiba then by some 3rd party.

If the worst comes to the worst, charge the battery with the Thrive and then keep it as the spare - of course :)
